Letter from the Seller

9522 Bruce Drive was built in 1941 for exiled Russian Countess Nathalie Volkonsky and her two sons. She wanted a place designed to meet the needs of multiple generations under one roof, a house where everyone could have his or her own space.

This made it the ideal home for us when we became the third owners 29 years ago as two busy commuters and parents, soccer Mom and Cub Scout Dad. It remained our perfect home as we progressed to college parents, mother and father of two brides and two grooms, empty nesters, retirees and now grandparents.

We enjoyed the first-floor master suite, with adjoining office and library. The library became our favorite room, for reading, watching TV, listening to music or enjoying the view of the backyard from the bay window.

Upstairs were two big bedrooms for the kids, offering plenty of space of their own, including a huge walk-in closet with a round window that doubled as a playroom for our two sons. After the kids left home, these rooms became a guest bedroom and a crafts and hobby room.

The basement family room, with its gas fireplace, bar and adjoining full bath, was a favorite spot for watching the Orioles, Nats and Redskins. And during the warm weather months, we enjoyed Sunday morning breakfasts and weekend cookouts on the patio, while listening to the sounds of songbirds and the waterfall in our koi pond.

We loved the neighborhood because it combines quiet and tranquility with easy access to public transit, the Beltway and downtown Silver Spring. The little park across the street is the perfect place for neighborhood block parties. Just a few blocks away is Sligo Creek Park, with its playgrounds, bike paths, soccer fields, tennis courts, picnic spots and even a nine-hole public golf course.
